MayScaffolding vs PacFractions

This CLIL unit about Fractions is designed to allow all students in their 1st year of  Compulsory Secondary Education belong to a bilingual class context, with English as L2, achieve the following learning outcomes:
  • To know, understand and use fraction concepts.
  • To describe the procedure for finding equivalent fractions.
  • To reduce a fraction to lowest terms.
  • To apply fraction concepts to solve problems.
  • To calculate Lowest Common Denominator.
  • To apply all procedures for ordering fractions.
  • To operate with fractions.
  • To do word problems related to fractions.
The area is Maths and the subject contents are:
  • Meaning of fractions.
  • Equivalent fractions.
  • Simplify fractions.
  • Calculate Lowest Common Denominator.
  • Compare and order fractions.
  • Basic operations with fractions
  • Use the order of operation involving fractions.
  • Word problems related to fractions.
At the end of this unit students will be able to record in pairs a video describing how to calculate an operation involving fractions and a word problem.

This unit will be developed in eigth sessions. In order to reach our goals I have designed the following tasks:

Session 1:
Brainstorming ideas about fractions. We will expect learners to use some L1 , then translate.
Content: Meaning of fractions.
Activity: Matching up diagrams and fractions

Online dictionary of English pronunciation

Session 2:
Contents: Equivalent fractions.
                Simplify fractions.
Activities: Effective scaffolding.

Contents: Basic operations with fractions.
Activities: Effective scaffolding.

Activity: In pairs students are going to cut and play to Fraction Jigsaw.
